being away from home

Being away at sea is one of the best experiences of my life. I get to meet new people, I get to see the beautiful sunrises and sunsets, I get to see marine life daily and I get to do what I am most passionate about; navigating. However, there is never a time where I don't miss home.
On board, it is sometimes very difficult to find a time to call home, or even get the reception to do so!
Here are a few ways I manage with being home sick.
-keep positive
Now I know this is easier said than done. I have days were I sit in my cabin and wish I was sitting in my lounge room with my dogs and family. But it is important to stay positive. This feeling is not long term. You will be home soon enough I promise!! and it will all be worth it in the long run.
-keep busy
In my spare time I try and keep myself busy to stop the negative thoughts. Try something like yoga, going to the gym, going and hanging out with the crew or even watching a movie.
-establish routines
Create a daily routine after your watch to have some sort of familiarity. For example, if you're on the 8-12, knock off and go to the gym, eat your lunch, do some meditation. By creating a daily routine, you can achieve more things and avoid thinking about what's going on back home.
-make your cabin uniquely yours!!!!!
This is one that I strongly recommend. Your cabin isn't going to feel like your home if it is basic. In my cabin, I have my own sheets that make it seem more homely. I also have pictures stuck on the bulkhead and different books around my cabin that remind me of home. By adding simple things like this, it makes the ship feel more like home which is important (especially on longer voyages.)
-talk to the crew
Don't forget, your crew members are in the exact same boat (mind the pun!!) Jokes aside, all the crew members are working away from their families too. Sometimes it's just nice to talk to someone and have them be able to relate to your situation.
-don't get discouraged
The most important thing is to think of the benefits. You have joined the vessel for a reason. Live out your dreams and enjoy your time on the endless ocean.
